Afanti wins Innovation Award for low‑carbon broadcast power solution Afango
We’re delighted to see Afanti recognised with the Innovation Award at the Wales Business Awards 2026 for Afango - a sustainable solution for outside broadcast.
Afango delivers low-carbon temporary power for outside broadcasts (OB) through Nessa, a 300 kWh mobile battery system designed to replace traditional diesel generators with a cleaner, quieter alternative.
What makes Nessa particularly significant is the combination of circular design, real-world usability, and measurable carbon reduction in a single solution. With increasing pressure on the screen industries to decarbonise production without compromising performance, it offers a practical and scalable way to reduce emissions in live broadcast environments.
Supporting sustainable innovation through design
We supported Afanti’s core team of Osian Davies-Litt and James Edwards with Lynne Toogood of Rhydda, through Greening the Screen (GTS), funded by Ffilm Cymru Wales and Media Cymru.
Throughout the project, we supported Afanti as a critical friend – listening to their ambitions and prompting them to investigate further:
- The needs of users and stakeholders across outside broadcast
- The operational challenges faced on location
- How to design meaningful test frameworks for real-world conditions
- What data to capture to support confident decision-making
By taking this approach, Afanti ensured that both environmental impact and user needs were considered from the outset—leading to the development of a solution that works in practice, not just in theory.
Circular design for sustainable broadcast technology
Nessa is a powerful example of circular design in action.
Built using repurposed electric vehicle batteries that have reached the end of their first lifecycle, Nessa transforms end-of-life components into a high-value, low-carbon alternative to diesel generators—while significantly reducing noise and eliminating harmful emissions.
In just a few months on the road, Nessa has already proven its value across a range of high-profile broadcasts, including:
- Coverage of a UK Government announcement on international trade and investment
- Cân i Gymru
- Super Rygbi Cymru fixtures
It’s been fantastic to see demand for Afango’s services growing, reflecting a wider shift towards more sustainable broadcast infrastructure across the industry.
“One of the most heartening things about Afango’s win at the Wales Business Awards 2026 is that it shows how a user-centred approach can maximise the co-benefits that arise from sustainable innovations to deliver commercially and technically excellent solutions. Not only is Nessa making great strides in decarbonising temporary power, but she does it almost silently and with no noxious emissions, making her a desirable option for sensitive locations and much more pleasant to be around than a noisy, fossil-fuel generator.”

From pilot to real-world impact
Afanti recently launched Afango at the Urdd Gobaith Cymru Eisteddfod, Europe’s largest youth festival—an important milestone that demonstrated how low-carbon power solutions can operate reliably at scale in demanding live event environments.
For us, Afango is a brilliant example of how design, data, and collaboration can come together to accelerate the transition to more sustainable production.
